Mother Charged in Burning of Toddler
By KEVIN KEARNEY

HONESDALE - A Clinton Township woman charged in the burning of her 14-month-old son waived her right to a preliminary hearing and is scheduled to be arraigned July 11.

Susan Marie Pevec, 29, of Flat Rock Road in Browndale, faces numerous charges including endangering the welfare of a child, criminal conspiracy to commit simple assault, tampering with or fabricating physical evidence, and filing false police reports. She is free on $75,000 bail.

Pevec was at the Wayne County Courthouse on Wednesday morning, where she waived her right to the hearing.

The boy suffered second-degree burns on his torso. He was burned with an object that consisted of two concentric circles, with a larger circle being four centimeters in diameter and a smaller circle being 2 1/2 centimeters in diameter, according to court papers.

“Obviously that's very painful,” said First Assistant District Attorney Patrick Robinson, who is prosecuting the case.

According to police, Pevec was involved in a conspiracy to burn her child, tamper with evidence and then file false police reports to cast suspicion upon the child's father, her former boyfriend. Pevec “did or did allow another (person) to burn” the child, according to court papers.

It was unclear if anyone else may be charged.

The alleged abuse, which happened between Nov. 1, 2006, and May 22, was the result of an ongoing custody dispute, according to police.

Police said Pevec carried out a plan that involved everything from pointing police to a bag of evidence that indicated the baby's father was the abuser, to writing anonymous letters and sending mail, all designed to put the blame on her ex-boyfriend.

Robinson said he couldn't disclose who has current custody of the child. “I can say that he's not with her, the defendant,” he added.
